Reddit Retargeting: Make the Second Visit Count

·

Reddit retargeting illustrated by a first-visit pricing page connected to a second-visit card that answers the buyer’s next question.

The short answer

Reddit retargeting reaches people based on measured website actions or engagement with Reddit ads. Start with one meaningful audience, verify tracking and conversion exclusions, and use the follow-up ad to answer an unresolved buying question. Assess actual signups, activation, and payment outcomes while keeping attributed conversions separate from evidence of additional impact.

A second ad impression is easy to buy. A reason to reconsider your product takes more thought.

Someone who leaves your pricing page may be unsure about the cost, worried about switching, or comparing alternatives. Showing them the same pitch again does little to address those questions, even if they eventually return and your dashboard credits the ad.

Reddit retargeting gives you another opportunity to help that decision along. The starting point is what the visitor still needs to know: proof the product works, a clearer explanation of setup, or an honest account of its limitations. Here’s how to build a campaign around that next step and judge whether the return visit was worth paying for.

Choose the Audience Behind the Click

Website retargeting uses measured actions on your site, while engagement retargeting draws on interactions with your Reddit ads. Reddit’s Custom Audiences documentation describes both. Neither gives you a ready-made list of everyone discussing your category in a subreddit.

The distinction should shape the campaign. Someone who watched an introductory ad may still need to understand the product; someone who explored pricing may be weighing cost or implementation. Keep those groups separate when volume allows, so their results and follow-up messages remain interpretable. Our Reddit marketing funnel guide explains how those information needs change as buyers move toward a decision.

Choose a lookback window that fits the buying process. It determines how far back an action qualifies someone for the audience; an attribution window determines how long after an ad interaction a conversion can receive credit. Widening one does not automatically change the other.

A longer audience window creates more opportunity to reach people, but also includes older interests. If the eligible pool is too small, avoid dividing it into ever-smaller groups or forcing spending. Check its status in your account: Reddit’s documentation currently contains conflicting minimum-size figures.

Build Your First Reddit Retargeting Campaign

Consider a fictional SaaS product that helps teams migrate data. Its first retargeting test will reach pricing-page visitors from the previous 30 days who have not signed up. That window is a starting hypothesis, not a universal recommendation.

Website audiences require a working Reddit Pixel or Conversions API integration. Before creating the audience, verify that the pricing-page action and completed signup are recorded correctly. When both integrations report the same event, use deduplication so one action is counted once. Our Reddit advertising setup guide covers the measurement checks behind this step.

In Audience Manager, create a website retargeting audience, choose the appropriate source and configured event, set the window and save. Add it to a dedicated ad group, excluding signup and paid-customer audiences. Confirm that these exclusions are populated and applied; an empty list cannot remove customers reliably.

For this example, choose a signup goal within a suitable conversion-focused campaign, link to a migration walkthrough with a clear trial invitation and set a maximum test spend the team can afford. Define the review date around expected conversion delay and available volume.

Inspect expansion before launch. Reddit’s Standard campaign guidance describes automated targeting as a way to broaden reach. If you want to test only prior visitors, disable expansion where the selected setup permits it; otherwise report the campaign as expanded delivery rather than a restricted retargeting test.

What to Show in Your Retargeting Ads

The migration product’s first ad introduced the tool. Its follow-up should help a pricing visitor decide whether switching is manageable, perhaps through a short walkthrough explaining preparation, transfer steps and limitations. Repeating “Try our product” leaves that question unanswered.

Make the destination deliver the promised explanation without forcing visitors through a generic homepage. The formats in our Reddit ads examples offer useful creative references, but the decision you need to support should determine the message.

If the audience supports further segmentation, test recent visitors separately from older ones. You might address setup questions during the first seven days, then show a relevant customer example to visitors from days eight through 30. Exclude the recent audience from the longer-window group to reduce overlap. This creates stage-based eligibility, not a guaranteed viewing order: delivery depends on who returns to Reddit and which ads they actually see.

Once someone signs up, remove them from the acquisition message. A separate activation campaign could explain how to complete their first migration. Apply the same principle across the Reddit buying journey: each follow-up should resolve the next obstacle, rather than repeat a step the person already completed.

How to Measure Reddit Retargeting Results

Suppose the fictional test spends $600 and Reddit attributes 30 signups, producing a reported cost of $20 each. After reconciling the results with actual accounts, the team finds that six of those signups completed a migration. The spend per activated user is therefore $100, with payment outcomes still pending.

These illustrative figures answer different questions. The signup cost describes attributed acquisition efficiency; the activation cost adds a product-quality check. Neither establishes that the campaign created 30 additional signups. Keep click-through and view-through credit separate where available, check attribution settings and compare groups with similar time to activate or buy.

Our Reddit ads cost analysis shows why a low headline acquisition cost needs context. For this test, review audience eligibility, actual reach, repeat exposure, signup quality and eventual purchases before raising the budget.

When volume and study access permit, a randomized holdout can estimate whether the ads generated additional outcomes compared with withholding them. Reddit’s measurement framework distinguishes that causal question from attribution. If the sample is too small, report the uncertainty instead of declaring lift.

Before launching your first Reddit retargeting campaign, finish this sentence: “These visitors left before ___, so our next ad will help them ___.” If you can’t identify the decision you’re helping them make, the campaign needs more thought. Start with one audience, answer one unresolved question and follow the results through to customer quality before increasing spend.

Common questions

What is Reddit retargeting?

Reddit retargeting uses measured website actions or engagement with Reddit ads to define a follow-up advertising audience. It does not provide a ready-made audience of everyone discussing a topic in a subreddit.

How do I set up a Reddit website retargeting campaign?

Verify your Reddit Pixel or Conversions API integration and the actions you want to measure. Create a website audience in Audience Manager, choose the source, event, and lookback window, then add it to a dedicated ad group with populated signup and customer exclusions. Check audience eligibility, conversion goals, and targeting expansion before launch.

What is the difference between a lookback window and an attribution window?

A lookback window determines how far back a person’s action qualifies them for an audience. An attribution window determines how long after an ad interaction a conversion can receive credit. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

How should I measure Reddit retargeting results?

Reconcile attributed signups with actual accounts and follow them through activation and payment. Review audience eligibility, reach, repeat exposure, and customer quality, separating click-through and view-through credit where available. Attributed conversions alone do not prove the ads generated additional customers.
