The short answer

r/llc requires at least 30 total karma and an account at least 24 hours old, and AutoModerator states both numbers when it removes a post. It also removes any post containing an outside link unless the link is to a government site, which waits for manual approval. Those filters bite: only about half the posts in our sample stayed up and 42% were removed by moderators. Once you are through, it is a quiet, text-only question board, about four posts a day, where a typical post gets seven plain answers.

Who posts here

Knowledge levelBeginner to intermediate

Most posters are forming their first LLC and say they are new to all of it. They still write in the vocabulary of the paperwork: EIN, SS-4, registered agent, Form 5472, disregarded entity. Replies use the same terms without explaining them. A very basic question, like how to get an LLC at all, tends to get a short answer or none, while a specific question with the state and the form number gets a detailed one.

  • Non-US residents setting up a single-member LLC, often in Wyoming, to sell software or take card payments.
  • First-time US owners: freelancers, consultants and side businesses deciding whether and where to form.
  • Owners cleaning up a mistake: a missed filing, the wrong entity type, an LLC they never used and want closed.
  • People moving a business between states and asking whether to convert or start again.
  • A handful of regulars with tax or formation experience, and some service providers answering in the comments.

The rules, in the mods' words

  1. 1

Post content related to Business Registration only

You can ask for or give advice to other members in the domain of Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) or any other legal business structures. Make sure the content is relevant and does not deviate the focus of the sub.

  2. 2

No blog links and blog content

We define blogspam as content copied from other sources of news and information or slightly rewritten to attract traffic, or an excessive posting of one's own blog content for the same purpose, Practically all content, LLC related or not. Exceptions: Allowed are links or quotes in comments and replies that are relevant to and come normally in the course of discussions.

  3. 3

    No business promotion posts

No business promotion posts are allowed. Exceptions: You can promote your business in a relevant reply to a post or comment in other threads.

  4. 4

No “Tax Evasion” discussions are allowed

r/llc is meant to be a valuable resource for forming, operating, and managing LLCs legally and ethically. Tax evasion goes against these principles. Any member observed to be violating this rule by offering such techniques will be flagged. Questions and discussions about tax optimization strategies within the legal framework will, however, not be removed.

  5. 5

    No politics

People seen in violation of this rule will be temp/perma banned. Effective immediately, any and all posts regarding politics, no matter how relevant, will result in an immediate 4 week ban. You may appeal this if it happens to you. But it's pretty straight forward. We will no longer perma-ban first time offenders but multiple offenders will be perma-banned, including those who post multiple politically fueled posts in one sitting before we catch it the first time.

  6. 6

    No personal attacks

We encourage constructive criticism of ideas, concepts, approaches, and plans. Facing reality is a core component of successful entrepreneurship, and thoughtful feedback helps ventures thrive. However, personal attacks, insults, and inflammatory language are strictly prohibited. Let's maintain a respectful and professional environment for all members of this community. Please report threats or harassment. Do not engage with users harassing you or others.

  7. 7

Self posts only, links may only provide supplementary material

Only text posts are allowed, this is to encourage discussion. If you have links to share they must be on topic, described in the text and important for the discussion. Your post must contain enough material on Reddit to have a material discussion. This specifically means you cannot just post a title without explanatory text and you cannot post just a link (link-dropping). These are assumed to be attempts to use r/llc to generate traffic.

  8. 8

    No Self Promotion

It is acceptable to cite your sources and provide references to claims, even if this is to your own content/website. However, there should not be an explicit solicitation, advertisement, or clear promotion for the intent of awareness. Posts must not be made for the primary purpose of selling or promoting yourself, company or service.

  9. 9

    Avoid unprofessional communication

This subreddit fosters a collaborative environment for LLC owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. To ensure productive discussions, we encourage clear, courteous, and professional communication. Address concepts, plans, and strategies, not personalities. Present your views in a factual and unbiased manner.Acknowledge differing viewpoints without resorting to personal attacks. Avoid profanity, insults, and inflammatory language. Strive for understanding and constructive dialogue.

  10. 10

    No free offerings threads

Any free offerings posts will be removed.

  11. 11

    Follow the Rules of Reddit

Rules of Reddit - they apply everywhere on Reddit. Also consider Reddiquette. The latter isn't mandatory but might be used in considering the intent of your post.

  12. 12

    Unsolicited Opinion and Thoughts

Please do not use this community as your personal blog. Maintain a professional tone, avoiding personal opinions and subjective musings. Share strategies and approaches supported by research or proven successful methods. Frame your contributions within a clear context, outlining concepts and presenting arguments with supporting details. Seek and provide feedback to enhance existing ideas and strategies.

  13. 13

    No Investment Solicitation

Posts regarding specific investments, like cryptocurrency, are NOT allowed. Please don't try to solicit, hype, or otherwise provide investment advice. There are other subreddits better suited for that discussion.

These are the rules as archived in January 2025. Rules change. Check the sidebar before you post.

The culture

r/llc is a small help board about one thing: setting up and keeping a US limited liability company in good order. Every post in our sample was text, about 100 words, and close to half had a question for a title. Scores are low and nobody is here for them. The most upvoted post in our data had 19 points.

A large share of the traffic comes from founders outside the United States. They have formed a Wyoming LLC through an online agent and are now stuck on the next step: getting an EIN by fax without a social security number, finding a bank or payment account that accepts their country, or producing a US address that a bank will believe. The other steady stream is US owners with state questions, especially California's annual franchise tax and moving an LLC from one state to another.

The removal rate looks alarming and mostly is not about content. AutoModerator's karma message was by far the most common removal notice in our data, followed by the account age and outside link messages. The removed posts read like the kept ones: bank accounts, registered agents, EIN faxes. Several people posted the same question three or four times before one version stuck.

What lands

  • A stuck-at-this-step question with the facts laid out: country of residence, state of formation, what you have filed, who has rejected you.
  • A "what did you actually end up using" question about banks or agents. One from a founder turned down by every bank drew over 30 comments.
  • A state-specific cost question, such as whether an unused California LLC still owes the annual fee.
  • A useful heads-up about a rule change, like a new reporting threshold for contractor payments.
  • A question about compliance tasks people forget. It is dull and it is exactly what the room is for.

What gets removed or ignored

  • Posts from accounts under 30 total karma. This was the most common AutoModerator message in our data by a wide margin.
  • Posts from accounts less than 24 hours old.
  • Posts with any outside link in them, including links to formation services and review sites.
  • Business promotion posts and free offer threads, both banned by name in the rules.
  • Politics. The rules set an immediate four week ban for any political post, however relevant.

The unwritten rules

  • Leave links out of the post entirely. Name the service or the form in words. Only about 1% of comments carry a link either.
  • If AutoModerator removes your post for karma, reposting will not help. The sample has the same question removed several times in a row.
  • Give your residency and your state up front. The answer for a non-resident single-member LLC is different from the answer for a US resident, and people will ask.
  • Nobody here is your lawyer or accountant, and they say so. The sidebar says the subreddit is not a source of financial advice. Treat answers as leads to check.
  • Naming the provider you used is normal. Offering your own service in a reply happens and is allowed, but "DM me" replies stand out and read as a pitch.

Self-promotion

The rules come at this from several directions. No business promotion posts. No blog links or blog content. No free offerings threads. No posts made mainly to sell yourself, your company or your service. There are two written exceptions: you may promote your business in a relevant reply to someone else's post or comment, and you may cite your own content as a source for a claim. In practice the link filter does most of the enforcing, since a post with an outside link never appears. Providers who take part do it in the comments, by answering the question first and mentioning what they offer second.

Common questions

How much karma do you need to post in r/llc?

30 total karma, and your account must be at least 24 hours old. AutoModerator states both when it removes a post. In our sample the karma message was the most common reason a post was removed, so build karma by commenting elsewhere before you post.

Can I promote my business or service in r/llc?

Not in a post. The rules ban business promotion posts, blog links, free offer threads and posts made mainly to sell something. You are allowed to mention your business in a relevant reply to someone else's question, and posts with outside links are removed automatically.

Why was my r/llc post removed?

Usually one of three automatic filters: fewer than 30 total karma, an account under 24 hours old, or an outside link in the post. About 42% of posts in our sample were removed by moderators, and most of the removal notices we saw were these. A government link is held for manual approval, not deleted for good.

Is r/llc useful for non-US residents forming an LLC?

Yes. A large share of posts come from non-resident founders, and the common problems are well covered: applying for an EIN without a social security number, finding a bank or payment account that accepts your country, and getting a usable US address. Say where you live and which state you formed in.

Data as of October 4, 2026. Numbers come from public Reddit data (the Arctic Shift archive and GummySearch) sampled on this date. Removal share counts posts taken down by moderators, AutoModerator or Reddit's own filters. Banner and icon belong to the community. Moderators change rules without notice, so treat the sidebar as the final word.
