The short answer

r/interiordecorating publishes no karma or account age requirement, and almost nothing is filtered: about 98% of posts in our sample stayed up. Nine in ten posts are photos of a room with a question, and every post carries a flair such as Paint & Colors or Furniture Placement. The rules ask for details and pictures when you want help. The one thing that gets you banned is linking to your own blog or design business.

Who posts here

Knowledge levelBeginner

Posters say outright that they have no eye for design and ask for help with one room. Style terms show up now and then, but nothing is assumed, and replies are short, practical suggestions about colour, placement and lighting. A basic question is welcome as long as it comes with photos and some detail, which the rules ask for.

  • Renters and students working around things they cannot change, like wall colour, tile or a tight budget.
  • New homeowners deciding on paint, rugs, curtains and where the TV goes.
  • Couples who disagree and want strangers to break the tie.
  • People sharing a finished room or a before and after under the Showcase and Coming to Life flairs.
  • Commenters with a good eye who answer with a specific fix, sometimes an edited photo.

The rules, in the mods' words

  1. 1

    Subreddit Rules

Hello and thanks for joining r/interiordecorating! Few rules: 1- content must be related to interior decorating. You can post questions, share spaces you like, etc. 2- be nice to each other. Racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc will get you blocked 3- have fun and be yourself! xo

  2. 2

    Content

  3. 3

    Blog Spam

Do not post to your personal blog or design business. Such posts are spam and will result in your post being deleted and you being permanently banned.

  4. 4

    Discrimination

Be nice and helpful! Racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. will get you immediately banned.

These are the rules as archived in January 2025. Rules change. Check the sidebar before you post.

The culture

r/interiordecorating has about 1.1 million members, up from around 670,000 in 2024, and gets close to 80 posts a day. It is a help board. About 91% of posts are images, titles are around six words, and more than four in ten are questions. The typical post is a few photos of a room and a short paragraph on what feels wrong and what cannot be changed.

The flairs show what people ask about: finding a style, paint, rugs, furniture placement, wall art, curtains, finishing touches. Follow-up posts are common, with people coming back to thank commenters and show the small changes they made. The typical post gets about five comments, and comments are short, around 11 words.

Moderation is light and the tone rule is simple: be nice and helpful. Posters still brace for criticism, and some ask not to be bashed. The current friction is AI. People ask commenters to mock up a couch in their room, commenters reply with edited photos, and others call out posts they think are AI-made images fishing for engagement.

What lands

  • Several photos of the real room with what you like, what you hate and what has to stay.
  • A numbered choice between rugs, sofas or colours. Commenters answer with a number and one reason.
  • A before and after of a first home done cheaply, with what made the difference.
  • An update that thanks people and shows the changes made from their advice.
  • A floor plan or rough mock-up for a placement question, even a crude one.

What gets removed or ignored

  • Links to a personal blog or a design business. The rules say the post is deleted and the account permanently banned.
  • Anything not related to interior decorating.
  • Racism, sexism, homophobia or xenophobia in posts or comments, which the rules say means an immediate ban.
  • We saw no moderator removals in our sample, so these come from the written rules, not from examples.

The unwritten rules

  • Pick the flair that matches the question. Everyone does, and it is how people find the threads they like to answer.
  • Say what your budget and limits are. Renters who mention the landlord will not allow paint get advice that works around it.
  • A title that only says you need help is common but gives people nothing to click on. Name the room and the problem.
  • Links in comments are rare, about one comment in fifty, and almost all are images. A product link from a new commenter stands out.
  • Posting a rendering or an AI image as if it were your own room gets noticed and called out.

Self-promotion

The rule is blunt and appears three times: in the sidebar, in the rule list and on the submit page. Do not post your personal blog, design website or design business, or the post is deleted and you are banned. In practice the feed matches the rule. Posts are personal rooms and questions, and brand names appear only when someone says what they bought or asks for a recommendation. There is no tolerated route for promoting a service here. Helping in the comments as an ordinary member is the only kind of presence the place supports.

Common questions

How much karma do you need to post in r/interiordecorating?

No requirement is published, and the numbers suggest a low bar. About 98% of posts in our sample stayed up, around 2% were removed by Reddit's own filters, and we saw no moderator removals.

Can I promote my design business or blog in r/interiordecorating?

No. The rules say not to post your personal blog or design business, and that doing so gets the post deleted and you permanently banned. The submit page shows the same warning before you post.

What flair should I use in r/interiordecorating?

Use the one that matches your question. Every post in our sample had a flair. The most common are Find my Style, Paint & Colors, Rugs & Flooring, Coming to Life, Furniture Placement and Finishing Touches, with Showcase for finished rooms.

What kind of posts work in r/interiordecorating?

Photo posts asking a specific question about one room. About 91% of posts are images and the typical post runs around 70 words. The sidebar asks for details, pictures of the space and a layout if you have one, and says that gets better responses.

Data as of October 4, 2026. Numbers come from public Reddit data (the Arctic Shift archive and GummySearch) sampled on this date. Removal share counts posts taken down by moderators, AutoModerator or Reddit's own filters. Banner and icon belong to the community. Moderators change rules without notice, so treat the sidebar as the final word.
