How to bypass the Reddit login wall

The fastest way to read Reddit without logging in on a phone is to switch your browser to the desktop site. It takes a few taps and gets most people past the "get the app" popup.

How to bypass the Reddit login wall on your phone

Request the desktop site.

iPhone, Safari: tap the icon in the address bar that looks like a square with two bars in it, then expand the Page Menu via three "..." icon, and lastly Request Desktop Website. On older versions of iOS that button is aA. You can also long-press the reload button. Safari remembers the choice per site, so you only do it once for reddit.com. If you want it everywhere, it is in Settings, Safari, Request Desktop Website.

Android, Chrome: tap the three vertical dots in the top right, then tick the Desktop site box. Chrome 150 moved a few things around in that menu in July, but the checkbox is still there.

Then reload the thread. You get the full desktop layout, comments and all.

The downside is the text. The desktop layout on a 6 inch screen is small, and you will be pinching to zoom. Users on Reddit said the same thing the week the test started. Still beats a download prompt.

Why the desktop site skips Reddit's login popup

The wall is aimed at the mobile web layout, not at you.

The "get the app" overlay Reddit started showing in May is a mobile web test. Reddit's own words were "frequent logged-out mobile users." When your browser asks for the desktop version it sends a desktop user agent, Reddit serves the desktop page, and the mobile app prompt never fires. Reddit could close this any day. For now it holds for most people.

The same logic explains the other workarounds people report working some of the time. A private window or cleared cookies makes you look like a new visitor, and new visitors are not "frequent". uBlock Origin with a custom filter strips the overlay element, and on iPhone Safari's Hide Distracting Items does the same by hand. All of these are patches on one test. None of them are guaranteed, and Reddit can change the targeting whenever it likes.

What if the desktop site asks you to sign in too?

Then you are in the desktop test, and the options get worse. Try a private window first. It wipes the cookies Reddit uses to decide you are a frequent visitor, which is my best guess at what both tests key on. If that fails, the prompt is a page element and a content blocker can hide it, but you are now maintaining filters to read a thread about air fryers.

Switching to old.reddit won't help either. It has needed a login since July.

If you read Reddit more than a few times a week, make an account. It is free, you do not have to post, and Reddit clearly will keep tightening this. I would rather spend 30 seconds signing up than an evening on uBlock filters.

What is the Reddit login wall?

It's the prompt that stops you reading a thread until you log in or get the app. There are three of them now, rolled out over four months.

The first showed up at the end of April. Logged-out users on mobile Safari and Chrome started getting an overlay that says "get the app to keep using Reddit", with no way to dismiss it. Reddit told MacRumors it was a test on "a small subset of frequent logged-out mobile users" because "the experience is much better for them in the app."

The second is old.reddit. On July 1 an admin posting as boat-botany announced in r/modnews that "over the next month we will start requiring everyone to log in", calling logged-out Old Reddit "a significant source of abusive scraping and automated traffic." That one is done. old.reddit is not the escape hatch anymore.

The third is desktop. Since late July, Windows Report and Neowin have reported a login prompt on the new desktop site after two or three clicks, with two buttons, "Get Started" and "I already have an account", and nothing to skip it. Some people can reproduce it, some cannot, so it looks like another test.

Then there is NSFW content, which has always needed an account and still does. None of the workarounds above change that.

Why Reddit keeps putting up login walls

Logged-out readers are most of Reddit, and Reddit would rather have them signed in, inside the app.

In Q2 2026 Reddit had 130.3M daily active uniques. 77.7M of those were logged out, up 27% year on year. Logged in was 52.6M, up 7%. In the US it is 30.1M logged out against 23.1M logged in, and the logged-in number grew 1%. Steve Huffman said on the call that Reddit is "not building for drive-by traffic." The login wall is that sentence turned into a product.

This is also the part that matters if you market on Reddit. Most of the people reading a thread about your product did not sign in. They came from Google, or from an AI answer that cited the thread, and they read it once. A wall between them and that thread is a leak in your funnel, and a phone user who hits it does not know the desktop trick. They hit back and read the next result.

We already tell clients a Reddit thread is only worth what it does in Google and AI search. That still holds. The crawlers still read Reddit because Google and OpenAI pay for the data. The humans clicking through from those answers are the ones Reddit is now charging an app install.
